Animal Companion Leveling Guide [5e] I've found that pretty much at least once per campaign, one of my players wants to have an animal companion without being a Beastmaster Ranger. I've allowed it, but as we get to higher levels, they get squishier and squishier, and less and less relevant or useful. Because of this, I felt like it made sense.

Notably they can only be taken at level 4 or higher but are missing the normal text for reduced effective animal companion level. With flyby attack and a breath weapon they could be quite interesting.

Although it's not a comprehensive list of the Ranger's animal companion options, it's really not that hard to sort out what you can and can't use.
